“Ready, Set, Recycle” with Action and Goguikian Foundation

Action has helped The Goguikian Foundation – a non-profit philanthropic foundation – launch its pilot recycling project in Burj Hammoud, Lebanon.

“Ready, Set, Recycle!” got underway on Saturday, October 12th with a lunch event that was attended by a number of high profile individuals, including a representative from the Ministry of Environment, the President of Haigazian University, and the Mayor of Burj Hammoud.

The Municipality of Burj Hammoud closed part of the square in front of the town hall for the event, which included a street fair and booths for universities and environmental NGOs to showcase interactive projects for visitors.

“For the first time in Lebanon, we see local residents and local businesses, schools and NGOs, local government and national government collaborating on a recycling pilot project,” said Soheila Hayek, Executive Director of the Goguikian Foundation.
The project was designed by the Foundation’s scholarship recipients, working in partnership with the Municipality of Burj Hammoud, the Ministry of the Environment, eight local schools, and local banks and businesses.
Working with local organizations such as TERRE Liban and the Armenian Red Cross, the project will run for a period of 12 months, during which paper, plastic and aluminum will be collected.  Students will establish environmental clubs in 8 local schools and run an awareness campaign on the importance of recycling, in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment and TERRE Liban.
