Action Raises Awareness about Diabetes on the Occasion of World Health Day 2016

Action Latvia recently teamed up with the Latvian Diabetes Federation, luring crowds towards old town Riga for a public event which raised diabetes awareness on the occasion of World Health Day on April 7th.

Despite the fact that the most common type of diabetes – Type 2 – can be prevented with regular physical activity and a healthy diet, the number of people diagnosed with diabetes is still increasing year by year.

At the recent event, Action set up an ‘information tent’, which saw people engage in doctor consultations with informative reading materials also handed out about the disease, while 120 coupons for blood sugar testing were also distributed during the occasion free of charge.

To really emphasize just how much sugar the average Latvian consumes each year (approximately 30 kg), the Action team also built a symbolic pyramid out of 30 packs of sugar. In a bid to raise awareness on the important issue of diabetes, a letter was also sent to Latvian Members of Parliament and other officials drawing attention to issues regarding diabetes treatment and prevention in the country, requesting a call to action.

Action’s World Health Day activities were very well received by the media, with wide radio and television coverage (both in Latvia and Russia), coupled with reports in print and online media.
